Nieuwjaarsdrink 2014

This is my 3rd January in Ghent, so the city of Ghent invited me to the New Year's Drink for the 3rd time (I mentioned it last year and two years ago too). Unfortunately they didn't offer a nice mug this time, not even an ugly one. We were kindly asked to bring our own mug (and so I did), but of course you could survive even without home supply.

The weather was nice, sunny and cold, but not too cold (6°C isn't too bad in sunshine if you were dressed properly - I was). As expected, Sint-Baafsplein was full of people, not easy to find a friend there unless you just happen to bump into them, but we are in 2014 now, with the great invention of the mobile phone around for quite a while now. Not that calling is the best strategy, especially if you are standing close to the stage, but text messages can work :)
Sint-Baafsplein with the stage
Watch out, there're a lot of people and... a tram! This year the road was not closed (I wonder why not, the usual 2-hr closure couldn't have done too much trouble), and all the passing trams and buses needed special guidance.
Honestly, I don't even know whether the event was confined to Sint-Baafsplein in the previous years, I didn't even try to cross the crowded square. This time I arrived from the other direction (from Korenmarkt), and crossing was actually easier, not in the square but on the tracks. Anyway, I was glad to see some stands on the other side of Belfort too, sound carried nicely from the stage but less crowded.
Glühwein! and we are finally getting closer... Happy New Year!
